Balloons, burgers and buzz marked the launch of steam mill lane – the large little laneway at the heart of the neighbourhood.

Big (and tasty) things have been happening at Darling Square lately! 8bit, Belles Hot Chicken, Surry Hills favourite The Sandwich Shop, Sichuan eatery Ricefields, bubble tea experts Gong Cha and Italian eatery and bar Il Bacio have now all swung open their doors on Steam Mill Lane.

Mirroring the diversity of the city, and the Darling Square neighbourhood, these eclectic food offers now sit alongside handpicked fashion and lifestyle retailers, Citizen Wolf, Dresden Optics, Pict and personalised travel goods store ALIFEHAUS. There are also new conveniences in the way of Men’s Culture Barber and Darling Square Pharmacy, rounding off our laneway’s latest offering — with more still to come.

To celebrate the big moment, we gave away 300 burgers from 8bit, installed hundreds of balloons in a colourful laneway activation, and have been getting a delicious preview of Edition Coffee Roasters’ upcoming cafe with a pop-up coffee cart. We also set up a photo booth, encouraging you to capture your early laneway memories (give it a go if you haven’t tried it!), and rolled out vibrant overhead art installations from Peta Kruger.

To keep the party going, you can also expect an ongoing program of DJs and acoustic musicians, which will continue over the coming months.

As always, we’re always looking to what’s next – and soon adding to the diverse range of flavours on Steam Mill Lane will be new eateries Bang Bang, complete with karaoke, ramen and whisky; a second storefront from Darlinghurst coffee stalwart Edition Coffee Roasters; delicious banh mi from Marrickville Pork Roll; healthy poke bowls from Fishbowl; and satisfying Greek tastes from Gyradiko.

Stay tuned for the next big moments on Steam Mill Lane!
